Roger Babson and His Legacy in Economics and Sociology



Roger Babson was a business theorist and an entrepreneur who was known to be the founder of Babson College in Massachusetts, Webber College (now known as Webber International University) in Florida, and the Utopia College (now defunct) in Kansas.

Babson studied at Massachusetts Institute of Technology. In 1904, he founded the Babson’s Statistical Organization. He founded this organization to analyze how traded shares perform in the market and summarize them in business reports. Today, this organization is known as Babson-United Inc.

As a writer, Babson also wrote over 40 books on economics and sociology. The most widely read among these publications are “Business Barometers for Profits, Security and Income” (with 10 editions) and “Business Barometers” (with 8 editions). He has written hundreds of articles in newspaper and magazine columns.

Babson is also a stock trader. He has invested in many corporations traded on the New York Stock Exchange. His passion for trading was known through the investment letter he created, Babson’s Report.
