Giorgio Armani’s Success Story

Owner of his self-named label of clothesline, Giorgio Armani, is known as Italy’s most popular and successful fashion designer.

When he was younger, Armani attended Milan University where he studied medicine to pursue his dream of becoming a doctor. While at the university, Armani found a new passion in photography. When he was 23 years old, he was enlisted to the Italian Army.

He became a window dresser in a Milan department store named La Rinascente upon his return from the military service. This stint in this store allowed him to discover his exceptional eye for clean lines and elegant styles.

From 1961 to 1970, he worked as designer in the fashion house, Nino Cerruti. His time with Nino enhanced his distinct taste for fashion as the designer of Nino Cerruti’s Hitman line. In 1970, he left Nino to become a freelance fashion designer.

In 1974, he started his own label. A year after that, Armani opened his women’s wear line with the help of his sister Rosanna Armani. Other clotheslines also opened after that – Armani Underwear, Giorgio Armani Junior, Armani Accessories, Swimwear and Occhiali.

His most successful product lines were Emporio Armani and Armani Jeans which he launched in 1981. They became popular with the masses because they are less expensive and can be worn even on the streets. In 2000, he also opened his makeup line.

Armani was the first fashion designer to showcase models with body mass indexes of over 18, as opposed to very thin-bodied models. He was also the first to provide live streaming videos of his fashion show via the internet in 2007.

His fashion wisdom has given him countless awards and recognitions in the fashion world. His contributions benefited both the sophisticated and the common man. This gave him millions of dollars in earnings each year.

Armani was born in Piacenza, Italy on July 11, 1934.
