Eliphalet Remington: A Legacy that Ran for Generations

Eliphalet Remington was an American industrialist who was credited for designing the Remington rifle. He was known as the founder of the company known today as Remington Arms Co., LLC.

Remington was born on October 28, 1793 in Suffield, Connecticut. Like his father, Remington also ventured into the blacksmith trade in the family’s forge in Herkimer County, New York. At just 23 years old, Remington hand-made a flintlock rifle. He himself constructed the barrel while the purchased the firing mechanism from a gunsmith.

The flintlock rifle was received with an overwhelming response which led Remington to mass produce his rifle. In 1840, Remington and his three sons co-founded the E. Remington and Sons, the family’s business. The company grew as it ventured to new products, including the manufacture of sporting goods. Remington renamed the company as Remington Arms. Co., Inc. Remington was the company’s president until his death in 1861.
